University of Alberta opts out of Maclean's rankings A letter from University of Alberta President Indira Samarasekera: The University of Alberta has joined 10 Canadian universities in declining to participate in this year’s Maclean’s magazine’s annual rankings issue which will appear in November 2006. As a major research university that subscribes to rigorous collection and meticulous analysis and application of data, the University of Alberta objects to Maclean’s methods of compiling and aggregating data to generate a global ranking of Canadian universities. Like the other 10 universities, we consider this an arbitrary and invalid misuse of data. Further, we are concerned that the resulting rankings do not give an accurate picture of the strengths and differences among Canadian universities needed to assist students, parents and counsellors in making informed decisions. Each year, Maclean’s asks our universities to provide customized data for its use in generating its rankings. Because we object to the way this data is compiled once it is submitted, we can no longer justify the use of our institutional resources to support the development of these rankings. On this website you will find a copy of the letter signed by the presidents of the 11 universities notifying Maclean’s of our decision, and a list of questions we anticipate may be generated by our action. As a public institution, the University of Alberta devotes substantial resources to accountability and transparency and will continue to compile rigorous data on our performance and publish it on the web. On this site you will also find a link to that data. The University of Alberta and our 10 co-signatories continue to hope that we will be given the opportunity to work with Maclean’s in the future to develop a rigorous, valid method of ranking Canadian universities. Maclean’s is an important publication that has contributed significantly to the national discussion of post-secondary education in Canada, and we share its goal of supplying its readership with good, useful information about universities and colleges.
