EFFECTIVE APRIL 26, 2009, LRT ACCESS FOR U OF A EMPLOYEES IS EXTENDED TO THE SOUTH CAMPUS STATION

Questions and Answers about U of A staff use of the LRT with the ONEcard

Who is eligible to take advantage of this program?
All University of Alberta employees with a valid staff ONEcard may use that card to travel on the LRT between South Campus station and Churchill Square station.

Is a Staff ONEcard the only card that will be accepted for University employees to ride free on the LRT?
Yes.

How do I know if I am eligible for a staff ONEcard?
If you are already employed in a regular continuing position, you are likely eligible. Contact the ONEcard Office at 492-7924 during office hours or by sending an email request to onecard@ualberta.ca. To get your ONEcard, please visit during regular office hours at B-12 Cameron Library. Be sure to have your ID number and Photo ID (passport or driver's license) ready. More information is available at http://www.onecard.ualberta.ca/.

How do the transit police identify a valid ONEcard?
The word “staff” appears on the front of your valid ONEcard (see the image below). Most ONEcards have an expiration date on the back that indicates its validity. If your staff ONEcard does not have an expiration date, please visit the ONEcard Office to receive a new ONEcard.

What happens if I use the card outside the zone (South Campus - Churchill Station)?
The transit authority has informed us that they will fine those caught using their ONEcard outside the approved zone.

My Staff ONEcard is expired. Should I get a new one?
Yes. Bring your expired ONEcard to the ONEcard office to exchange for a new one.

I lost my ONEcard. How can I ride the train now?
Come to the ONEcard office for a replacement card. There is a $20 fee for replacement ONEcards.

Are faculty considered staff/employees and therefore eligible to take advantage of this program?
Yes.

Can Professors Emeriti obtain a staff ONEcard?
Not at this time; however, the issue is under review.

Are Post Doctoral Fellows eligible for the LRT staff program?

I am a student and an employee of the University. Can I get a staff ONEcard?
Maybe. To be eligible for a staff ONEcard you must be employed in a continuing non-student position. It is best to call the ONEcard Office to confirm your eligibility.

As a student who is also a staff member (eligible for free transit) can I opt out of the U-Pass fee?
No.

I have left the employ of the University but still have my ONEcard. May I take advantage of this program?
No. This program is intended to facilitate staff transit between our campuses.

I am on campus preparing to start work at a future date. Can I get my ONEcard early?
No. Your employment contract must have started before you are issued a ONEcard.

When is the best time to get a staff ONEcard?
The ONEcard Office is open Monday to Friday between 8:30 and 4:30. The office is open over the lunch hour.

What do I need to do to get a Staff ONEcard?
Make sure your employment contract has begun by confirming your status with the ONEcard Office. If everything is in order, proceed to the ONEcard Office with photo identification (driver’s license or passport) to have your ONEcard made.

Can I get on and off at any station along the continuum announced?
Yes.

Will the program be extended beyond Churchill to northern stations and beyond South Campus when new stations come on line?
