> University of Alberta opts out of Maclean's rankings
> Why is the University of Alberta not participating in this year's ranking issue?
The University of Alberta has joined with the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, McMaster University, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge, University of Ottawa, University of Manitoba, Dalhousie University, and Université de Montréal in withdrawing from the Maclean's magazine university rankings. Our intention is to finally convince Maclean's to revise the way it presents our submitted data to accurately reflect provincial and university differences without the distorted scoring and composite ranking. Many of us have approached Maclean's individually over the years to discuss changes that needed to be made in the methodology to produce an accurate picture of universities across the country. For instance, school grading practices vary markedly across the provinces. Maclean's continues to rank university entering grades comparatively when they come from completely different systems and different standards. We propose it is time for a unified approach because students, parents and counsellors deserve to make informed decisions based on accurate information.
