Impacts
The University of Alberta's impacts include:
Spending
· The University of Alberta employs 14,999 full-and part-time people who earn more than $795 million annually to spend locally.
· Operating the University of Alberta involves additional spending on goods and services of approximately $566 million annually.
· Spending by the University of Alberta, its employees, students and visitors totals some $6.4 billion annually, $5.6 billion in Alberta and supporting more than 125,886 jobs in Alberta as spending ripples throughout the economy.
Building
For 2009-10 the University’s capital budget identifies total expenditures of $665.3 million. Of this, $502 million has been budgeted for approved capital expenditures and a further $162.9 million identified for future and potential projects.
In support of teaching and innovation, the following capital projects were recorded as substantially completed in 2009-2010:
· Augustana Library: A modern facility to support campus growth and enhance student study areas.
· Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) North Lecture Theatres: Two large 400- to 500-seat lecture theatres and a building to position scientific, community leaders of tomorrow at the interface between traditional scientific disciplines for innovation.
· Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation and Katz Group Centre for Pharmacy and Health Research Fit-Outs: An ongoing fit-out program which saw in 2009-2010 the completion of facilities for the: Institute of Virology; Institute for Biomolecular Design; Cardiovascular Translational Research Centre; Centre of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research; Ultra-Trace Clean-Laboratory; Surgical Medical Research Institute; and Alliance for Canadian Health Outcomes Research in Diabetes.

Alumni
· 17 senior executives in the province's top 100 private sector companies (Alberta Venture 2009) are University of Alberta alumni.
Research Activity
· More than $513 million in research funding was brought into the Edmonton region through the University in 2009-10, including funding for clinical trials and related research, from national and international industry/associations.
· University of Alberta research activity generates approximately $450 million in spending and supports more than 17,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
Spin-off Companies
· The University of Alberta has 78 active spin-off companies by the end of fiscal year 2009, in which more than 85% are based within Alberta.
· University of Alberta publicly traded spin-off companies had a total market capitalization of approximately $20 million on March 31, 2009.
