A New Beginning

The Orthodontic Graduate Program, with the support of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, has embarked on a new age of education in the field of Orthodontics.

Our Vision

"Graduate orthodontically qualified clinical scientists by encouraging intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning for the benefit of their communities."  This will be based on excellence in evidence-based clinical education, focused externally funded collaborative research, and leadership in the adoption of innovations leading to improved patient care.

Our Mission

"The University of Alberta Orthodontic Graduate Program is committed to providing academic and clinical experience for successful educational or scientifically based private practice careers. We will create an environment that promotes innovation and critical thinking skills with participation in leading edge research and implementation of evidence-based clinical procedures into practice.  Through a self-directed learning environment we will establish the foundation for our graduates to be leaders in their professional and local communities. We will service our regional orthodontic community and alumni by providing advanced learning opportunities. We will service our local community by providing quality orthodontic care to a segment of the population not able to access private practice."

The University of Alberta, Orthodontic Graduate Program, in teaching, research and community service, hopes to be recognized, nationally and internationally, as one of Canada’s finest programs and amongst a handful of the world’s best.

Our strategic plan for 2008-2009 charts our future direction in response to circumstances that highlight new research opportunities and challenges for advancing the quality of teaching in Orthodontics today. Strategic Business Plan 2008 (PDF)

We will attract and support outstanding faculty. We will subsidize the indirect costs of valuable research. And with the assistance of the Industry Liaison Office we will promote the commercialization of new technologies.

Our Goal

Our primary educational goal is the development of whole people. We want to develop leaders of tomorrow who contribute to the well-being of society and can compete successfully in today’s international marketplace.

Orthodontists need to use new skills in learning and research. We offer educational experiences that cultivate critical thinking and independent judgment, creativity and enterprise, inter-personal and modern technical communication, as well as international understanding.

We are committed to research that has international impact, with benefits for Alberta’s global learning environment, and we are dedicated to transferring new innovations from research breakthroughs to public and commercial applications.

The University of Alberta provides opportunities for life-long learning and facilitates knowledge-based employment, research and development.

“The best thing about being a graduate student isn’t necessarily obvious. It’s being intellectually awake, thinking all of the time, learning and expanding your mind.”

“A love of science and an interest in discovery are the seeds that graduate schools nurture into Ph.D.'s.”
