Wave: A Major Art and Media Installation, June 2011 to May 2012: This installation will provide an opportunity for the public to experience and reflect upon the themes of the Centenary through an immersive media environment. 

Convention of the Media Ecology Association, 23 to 26 June 2011: The annual convention of the Media Ecology Association (MEA) will be held in Edmonton in 2011. The MEA convention in tandem with the McLuhan Centenary will raise awareness of the applications of media ecology and medium theory in today’s media-rich social, cultural, and economic landscapes.

Communications and Technology Annual Research Symposium, 20 May 2011 - Public Lecture:  Professor John Durham Peters (University of Iowa), author of Speaking Into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication, will give a public talk entitled, “Communication Infrastructures Old and New.” Prof. Peters will argue that ancient technologies of social organization such as fire, record-keeping, towers, calendars, and deity are suddenly relevant again. The talk will be held at Enterprise Square , University of Alberta, at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.  

Film Screening: Thursday, 9 June 2011 – Marshall McLuhan’s intellectual and cultural contributions are explored in the National Film Board presentation McLuhan's Wake, which will be presented at6:30 p.m., Stanley Milner Library Theatre, Churchill Square, Edmonton. Admission is free. Friday, 24 June 2011 McLuhan and artistic vision in the wireless city,” a public panel discussion at the Media Ecology Association 2011 Convention, with authors Elena Lamberti, B.W. Powe, and Douglas Barbour, 10:30 a.m., Telus Centre Auditorium, University of Alberta. Admission is free. This event is part of the Herbert Marshall McLuhan Edmonton Centenary, hosted by the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta.

Saturday, 25 June 2011 – Mark Poster (University of California, Irvine), “Theorizing culture and media: McLuhan and Foucault,” a public lecture. Admission is free. Prof. Poster’s presentation is made possible in part by financial support from the Henry Marshall Tory Professor, University of Alberta.

 

On the birthday. On 21 July 2011, Marshall McLuhan Day in Edmonton will be proclaimed.

 

 

 

Spaces&Places:VisioningMcLuhan@100, an exhibition at Latitude 53 Gallery of Contemporary Visual Culture, opening 23 June 2011. Artists and designers from around the world are participating using diverse media, practices, and styles, including 2D works, 3D installations, and online explorations. All works deal with concepts and ideas that relate to or explore manifestations of McLuhan’s ideas. More information at http://www.latitude53.org/.

Wednesday, 20 July 2011 – On the eve of the 100th birthday of Marshall McLuhan, don’t miss a festive evening, featuring performances, special displays, and cupcakes, Art Gallery of Alberta, Churchill Square, Edmonton, 7:30 p.m. A tour will begin at 7 p.m. of Warhol: Manufactured, led by the U of A’s Prof. Marco Adria, who will connect the scholarship of Marshall McLuhan and Andy Warhol, two major public figures of the 1960s and 1970s. Admission is free. This event is part of the Herbert Marshall McLuhan Edmonton Centenary, hosted by the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta.
