Master of Arts in Classical Archaeology

Entry Requirements

A BA with major in Classics with at least (*6) of Ancient Greek or Latin at the 100-level and with eight courses (*24) in Classics at 200-level or above, at least two (*6) of which must be at the 400-level. Students with a major in Archaeology, Anthropology, History or Art History may also be accepted, provided they have taken at least six courses (*18) in Classics at the 200-level or above.

Programme Requirements

Students must pass a minimum of six (*18) graduate-level courses, including at least three (*9) in Classics (i.e., Classic, Latin or Greek). Others will normally be in Anthropology or in a discipline approved by the Department (e.g., History, Art History, Museum Studies). The programme also requires successful completion of a directed research project 2 units of (CLASS 900, *3) requiring an examination on primary sources and/or secondary literature relevant to the research topic and submission of a research paper of about 40 -50 pages. In addition students are required to complete CLASS 501 Research Research Methods and Resources in Classics (*1) and to pass a modern language examination in French, German or Italian.

Length of Program

The Program is designed to be complete in two or three terms, depending on preparation and course selection.

Notes

1. Graduate-level courses are courses at the 500-level or above.

2. CLASS 900 is a credit/no credit course; the examination and the project are assessed by the suprvisor and one other Classics Faculty member.

3. For the modern language requirement, the student may take and pass, with a minimum grade of 7, *6 of a senior undergraduate course in an appropriate language other than English.

The student may pass a language translation examination, administered by the Department. The Departmental language examination is held 3 times a year, September 5, December 10, and April 15.

4. Successful completion of a Classics MA does not guarantee admission to the PhD programme. Students should consult their supervisor about planning a course of study that will allow them to meet PhD admission requirements.
