Greece Archaeological Field School

EXCAVATE A HELLENISTIC HOUSE

3-24 June 2012

Discover the Archaeological Field School at Kastro Kallithea, Greece as a participant in a Canadian/Greek archaeological project.

The 2012 season will be the eight season at Kallithea. The project aims at mapping, surveying and excavating an extensive and very well-preserved fortified Classical/Hellenistic city in the breathtaking landscape of Achaia Phthiotis in central Greece.

This 6* undergraduate and graduate course will introduce students to research strategies such as survey, GIS and excavation used in the archaeological study of large urban sites. The course will focus on excavation and recording techniques applicable to the excavation of domestic structures. It is open to students with a background in Classics, Classical Archaeology, Anthropology, Art History, and Ancient History.

The course will be taught by Prof Margriet Haagsma, associate professor in the Department of History and Classics who specialises in the archaeology of Greek urban and domestic space and has worked for more than twenty years in Greece. Each student will excavate an individual unit directly supervised by experienced graduate students. On Sundays the group will visit archaeological sites in the environs and the museums in Almiros and Volos.
We hope to be able to finalize the excavation of one house, ‘Building 10’, this season.
