HISTORY Courses 200 Level
HIST 207 EUROPE IN THE CENTRAL MIDDLE AGES *3 (3-0-0)
The course’s temporal scope spans, approximately, the ninth to the thirteenth centuries, with a preliminary sketch of the late antique background offered as an introduction to the period. In terms of the content, the course focuses on the religious, intellectual, social, political and economic developments characterizing the period commonly know as the Middle Ages. To be more specific, the lectures and readings treat such issues as Christianity’s establishment, ecclesiastical disintegration and reform, the crusades, the papacy, the rise of universities, scholasticism, “feudalism,” monarchy, medieval humanism and the (contested) “discovery of the individual.” The course thus pursues a core theme, one well established in the historiography: the interconnectedness of medieval religion and society. Complementing the inquiry’s general thematic orientation is the more particular examination of selected primary sources (in translation), which also figure prominently in the course’s assigned paper. In short, then, the objective undertaken in the investigation is twofold: to study salient features of the Middle Ages within an overarching theme and to enhance that study through an encounter with primary texts.
