Jamaica Teacher Development Project: Joint Board of Education

The Jamaica Teacher Development Project linked the Faculty of Education at the U of A with the Joint board of Teacher Education for Jamaica, Belize and the Bahamas through the University of the West Indies.

After being awarded the T.H.B. Symons Senior Fellowship in Commonwealth Studies, Dr. Kazim Bacchus spent a year in Jamaica conducting research on the educational needs of teacher colleges. Dr. Bacchus prepared a successful proposal for a project to contribute to the improvement of the quality of teacher education in Jamaica. The Jamaica Project was coordinated through the CIED, with Dr. Sharon Jamieson as the U of A Project Director.

The main component of the Jamaica Project involved U of A Education faculty members traveling to Jamaica, conducting educational workshops, and offering Summer Institutes for teacher educators. Summer Institute courses and workshops varied from year to year; topics included: mathematics, science, technology education, teaching literature at the primary level, testing and measurement, instructional strategies, adult education models, peace and global education, and environmental education.

U of A Staff and Faculty involved in teaching Summer Institute courses and leading workshops in Jamaica included: Dr. Sharon Jamieson, Dr. David Mappin, Dr. T. Rogers, Dr. G. Cathcart, and Dr. Julia Ellis.

Additionally, teacher educators from Jamaica received funding to study in the Faculty of Education at the U of A. Teacher educators who came to the U of A were able to attend classes, conferences and workshops, visit local schools, and participate in departmental activities. Several of the visiting students completed graduate studies in Elementary Education at the U of A, while other teacher educators completed graduate degrees at the the University of the West Indies.

In September, 1995, the Jamaican Project Director from the Joint Board of Teacher Education in Jamaica, Dr. Don Wilson, visited the U of A to meet with the Canadian Project Director, Dr. Sharon Jamieson, the Director of the CIED, Toh Swee-Hin, and the Jamaican students currently studying at the University of Alberta.
