EDMONTON PLAYWRIGHT’S AWARD WINNING WITHOUT YOU MAKES ITS DEBUT

Studio Theatre unveils the world premiere of Without You, a poignantly funny, award-winning new work by Edmonton playwright Nicole Moeller, directed by Bradley Moss (MFA Directing ’95), opening November 27 – December 6, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the University of Alberta’s Timms Centre for the Arts (87 Avenue & 112 Avenue).

Nicole Moeller wrote the first draft of Without You for the 2008 University of Alberta Bookstores’ 10 Days of Madness 24-Hour-Playwriting competition. As the winner, the play received a workshop which resulted in a public reading that so impressed Theatre Network’s Bradley Moss and UofA Studio Theatre Programming Chair, Professor Kathleen Weiss that it was agreed the play would be produced as part of Studio Theatre’s season, with Moss as guest director.

“I’m grateful to the companies committed to producing new plays and to events like the 10 Days of Madness Playwriting Festival - they are crucial,” says playwright Nicole Moeller. “Art is one of the only ways to immortalize a time, culture or generation. This is a play about mine. I wrote what was true in my own life, the lives of friends, and the lives of those around me struggling with who they are and where they’re headed.”

Without You is a witty and charming, contemporary search for The One – a search we all can recognize. Gabriella and Scott are in love…they’re pretty sure anyway. She’s a musician pursuing a dream; he’s an academic in pursuit of a career. The wedding is in six months. Somewhere between chicken or beef, colour schemes and groomsmen, Scott develops a secret and Gabby makes plans to leave. While he is holding on with everything he has, she is letting go.

The cast introduces graduating BFA Acting students Samantha Duff (Gabriella), Vincent Forcier (Pyshic, Allan, Jack, Raine), Blythe Haynes (Mrs. Wrightman, Charity, Karla, Tina, Mom, Glitter), and Matthew McKinney (Scott). BA Drama student Perry Gratton is Assistant Director.

Sets are designed by April Viczko (MFA Theatre Design ’07), lights by current MFA Theatre Design candidate Ruth Albertyn and costumes by UofA Theatre Design Professor Robert Shannon. Music and lyrics are by Jill Pollock. The production team includes BFA Technical Theatre Stage Management students Lester Lee (Stage Manager) and Lisa Dalmazzi (Assistant Stage Manager), and a roster of MFA/BFA Theatre Design and BFA Technical Theatre Production students. UofA’s Lee Playwright-In-Residence Kevin Kerr worked as a dramaturge to assist Nicole Moeller with revisions of the play.

Evening performances of Without You run November 27 – December 6, at 7:30 pm, with a $5 preview performance Wednesday, November 26 at 7:30 pm. A matinee performance is scheduled for Thursday, December 4 at 12:30 pm. There is a no performance Sunday, November 30.
