Current Research Focus

CRSC maintains research expertise in fields of study which include regional development, urban geography, local environmental risk studies, governance and cultural identity.  What unites this work is a focus on engaging and supporting communities and city-regions as they face complex socio-economic challenges in a contemporary context shaped by globalisation, demographic change and environmental risk.  CRSC works with communities to translate academic research into the knowledge and capacity with which to improve social and economic well-being and foster sustainable futures. 

A sample of current research initiatives at CRSC includes:

Innovation and Nanotechnology in the Alberta Capital City-Region -The project addresses the relationship between innovation and community development focusing on the designation of Edmonton as a national centre for nanotechnology research and commercial activity.  This research is funded by the U of A Killam Cornerstones Grant.

Global Suburbanisms – Project examines the growth of cities and the demands suburban development places on systems of government and infrastructure (details).

Re-birth of Mini-malls –Research investigates how to support environmentally and socially sustainable, local community development through the revival of already existing urban and suburban retail places.

Partnership, Governance and Capacity Building – Researchers are seeking to understand and assist communities in developing cultures and practices of collaboration.


 

Completed Projects

Capital Region Board Case Study - This case study will look at the creation and function of the Capital Region Board (CRB), the regional governance structure created in the Alberta Capital Region in April, 2008. The study will examine why and how the CRB was formed, how it has functioned in its first year, and how it compares to previous incantations of regional governance in the Capital Region. (details)
 
Regional Governance Models: An Exploration of Structures and Critical Practices - A case study of 12 city-regions worldwide that are similar in population distribution to the Alberta Capital Region. The study was completed for the Government of Alberta, Municipal Affairs. Download Report.
