About Adding Links

What does the link that I add look like on my page?
These links will appear at the bottom of a page. This is the kind of link you will use when you want to link to pages that are outside of the scope of your organization or when you want to reference online sources for the materials you have compiled.

Can I make the page that is an external URL open in a new window?
Yes. When you add the link, select the “Open in new window” check box if you want the external URL to open in a new browser window. The new window will open on top of your page. Except for very particular circumstances, this is not recommended as many users dislike or are confused by new windows. If you have questions about this, click on "Request Help" in the upper right of the CMS.

How do I order my links, other than alphabetically?
Once you have added your links, scroll to the bottom of the page on which they appear in the CMS. Under the LINKS heading, click on "Click here to order links." When you do this, arrows will appear which you can click on to move links up or down in the list.

How do I reset the order of my links to alphabetical?
If you need to reset the order to alphabetical, click on "Reset order to alphabetical" in the under the LINKS heading near the bottom of the page.

Formatting Links
Whenever possible, links should be added to the bottom of pages using the LINKS option in the Site Menu. Grouping links together at the bottom of the page will help your visitor to scan for the content they need.

As well, "Print this page" text versions of the page will automatically include the link title and complete URL. (URLs of embedded links will not be displayed in a text-only version.)

Your visitor should know where links go without clicking on them. In other words, link titles should clearly state the destination of the link.

If you are linking to a non-html document, the document format (e.g. PDF, Word) should appear in brackets after the link title.

If you need to link to information that appears elsewhere in your site within the CMS, use the "add existing page" feature so that the page will appear in the navigation menu.
