First Recipients: Fraser and Shirley Russell Teaching Fellows

(Sep 30, 2006) Two Engineering students are singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” in honour of Dr. T.W. Fraser Russell, an alumnus of the University of Alberta.

Chidambaranathan Veeramani and Dayadeep (Misha) Monder, graduate students in chemical engineering, are the first recipients of the Fraser and Shirley Russell Teaching Fellowships. The fellowship has been established by Russell (Chemical ’56, MSc Chemical ’58), and is named in part after Russell’s late wife, Shirley, who was a dedicated and successful teacher. Supported by an endowment, this fellowship is similar to what Russell set up at the University of Delaware to acknowledge both of the Russell’s contributions to teaching. The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering is matching this first award.

The award gives Veeramani and Monder, both in the last year of their PhD programs, an opportunity for a supervised teaching experience in the undergraduate program. They will be mentored by an established professor.

Russell says, “I thought that for the 50th anniversary of my graduation I’d do that same kind of thing at the University of Alberta. A good teacher can make a huge difference in their students’ lives. Teaching can turn someone around so quickly–someone who is struggling or someone who doesn’t know what they want to do. I’ve always loved teaching. I understand there is a great deal of pressure on faculty these days to raise money for research—so much so that teaching can take a back seat. It’s a shame. I hope that in a small way this fellowship can do something to change that.”

The fellowship has already allowed Veeramani to teach during this fall semester. “The award comes at a right stage for me when I am just finishing up my PhD and considering options of academia and industry. This award will greatly help me in building that momentum before I have to hit the road running.”

Monder agrees, “I have wanted to teach for a long time now and it is one of the main reasons I came back to grad school. I am especially grateful for this award as it allows me to observe, collaborate with, and be mentored by one of the best teachers in the faculty. I plan to pursue an academic career, and believe the experience gained in teaching this course will be invaluable for me.”

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta offers numerous scholarships, fellowships, and bursaries to encourage students to pursue higher learning.
