Dr. Mitlin's core expertise includes structure-properties relations in nano-composites and thin films, solid-state phase transformations, metallic alloy design, microfabrication and materials characterization. His current research centers around on the development of advanced metallic nanomaterials for a variety of energy related applications including catalysts for oil-sands upgrading and carbon nanotube growth, solid state hydrogen storage, nano-electro-mechanical systems, and scanning probe cantilevers. Recently Dr. Mitlin was a recipient of the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award based on this research.

Prior to joining the University of Alberta in 2004, Dr. Mitlin was at Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA), where he utilized transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to understand interface structure in thin-film nano-layered composites. At Los Alamos, Dr. Mitlin was awarded a Directors Funded Post Doctoral Fellowship. From 2000 to 2002, Dr. Mitlin worked as a Design Integration Engineer at the IBM Semiconductor Research and Development Center, in Hopewell Junction NY.
