Standards

1. Graduate student supervisors should be active in research and publication in a field related to that of the proposed thesis.

2. The Graduate Committee of the Department must discuss the composition of the Supervisory Committee with the Supervisor, the student, and with other members of the Department expert in the proposed field of study. Following this discussion the Graduate Studies Committee will recommend to the Department the composition of the Committee, and the Department will then send a list of the Committee it has approved to the Graduate Faculty.

3. A Supervisor shall be appointed for every graduate student, ideally as soon as he/she arrives to begin the program.

Where this is not possible for academic or other reasons an Acting Supervisor may be appointed.

In any case the permanent Supervisor must be appointed within the first twelve (12) months of the student's program. [FGSR Manual 10.01]. (This is done on the 'Approval of Supervisor/Supervisory Committee' form).

4. All students in Classics shall have Supervisory Committees:

  • The Committees for the PhD students must be appointed before the second year, well in advance of the written Candidacy Examinations [FGSR Manual 10.04].
  • The Committees for the MA students should be appointed as soon as possible, and in no case later than the and of the first term.
  • The Department requires that faculty members interested in the subject area of the proposed thesis be consulted on the formation of any Committees.
  • The normal procedure is for the student, usually after consulting a faculty member, to request a member of the Classics Division to act as Supervisor. If the latter agrees, then he or she [supervisor] suggests a Supervisory Committee to the Department, normally through the Graduate Committee, after consultation with members interested in the subject area.
  • On occasion the Chair of the Graduate Committee may suggest a Supervisor and Supervisory Committee to the student.

5. The Supervisor and Supervisory Committee shall be recommended to the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research by the Department.

  • Normally the Graduate Committee acts for the Department and sends on the 'Approval of Supervisor/Supervisory Committee' forms on its behalf, informing the Departmental Council of its action.
  • If, however, there is a disagreement between the Committee and the faculty member who has agreed to act as a Supervisor over his/her appointment or over his/her suggestions for the Supervisory Committee, the matter may be referred to the Department Council. The Council may then make the recommendation to the Associate Dean of FGSR.
  • The Supervisor/Supervisory Committee must not be appointed without consultation with the student. Once the Supervisor and Supervisory Committee have been appointed they shall be reviewed annually by the Department [FGSR Manual 10.04]. The Graduate Committee shall request the Committee to report, either to it or to the Departmental Council, at least once a year.
