Transcripts for the last term’s work may not be available, but should be forwarded to the department as soon as they become complete.

Applicants registered in full-year courses are advised to obtain from their professors some indication of their standing and expected performance as of December. Applications will not be considered by the department until all academic transcripts (other than that for the last winter term) and all letters of reference are available.

Please include a one-page statement of purpose with your application. This should address the areas of history or classics you are interested in investigating.

Admissions Requirements |
The Department’s minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an average of 3.5 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution, and a TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based) or 240 (computer-based) where applicable. Evidence of foreign language acquisition is an important consideration in admission decisions.

A student proposing to enter a PhD program is usually expected to hold an MA degree or its equivalent. In some cases, however, a student may be admitted directly into PhD program without an MA.
A student proposing to enter a PhD programme is usually expected to hold an MA degree or its equivalent. In exceptional cases a student admitted as a candidate for the MA may subsequently be permitted to enter the PhD programme without a master’s thesis.
A student admitted as a Qualifying Graduate Student must normally take five full courses or the equivalent, at least three being History courses. The courses, usually senior undergraduate courses at the 300 or 400 level, will be chosen in consultation with the Graduate Chair. The student must attain a grade-point average of at least 3.5, with no single grade below B-. The student should also plan to complete the language requirement by the end of his/her qualifying year; advancement to candidacy status may be delayed until the student has passed the language examination.
