The University of Alberta Archaeological Field school in Italy will be held at two sites in 2012. The first two weeks will be spent at the Roman site at Ossaia  in Tuscany. The extensively excavated Roman site, with various phases, existed from the 1st c. BC through the 6th c. AD. This year we will concentrate on the Augustan villa: extensive remains of residential sector have been excavated: mosaics, wall paintings, brick stamps, and architectural decoration have been found. (Bibliography:  H. Fracchia, The Villa at Ossaia and the Territory of Cotona in the Roman Period)

The last two weeks will be held at Roccagloriosa in ancient Lucania/Basilicata, a pre-Roman site of the 6th c. BC to ca. 200 BC. The extensively excavated  grid plan settlement includes elite houses containing religious shrines and public buildings inside and outside of the fortification walls, as well as an extra mural  elite cemetery. The site had early contacts with the Greek colonies on the South Italian coast and later demonstrated a precocious institutional organization prior to the Roman take over of the area. (Bibliography:  M. Gualtieri and H. Fracchia, Roccagloriosa I, Roccagloriosa II, M. Gualtieri (ed.), Fourth Century BC Magna Greica)
