Change of Supervisor
Policy on Change of Supervisor by Graduate Students in History and Classics Adopted by Department Council on 12 September 1997.
The student normally shall in the first instance outline the reasons for the proposed change to the supervisor of record, since the supervisor has a right to know what is happening with respect to his/her students. Where the Graduate Chair is convinced that such a discussion would not be beneficial, the Graduate Chair or designee shall undertake the discussion on behalf of the student. The student normally next will consult with the Graduate Chair and the proposed new supervisor. In discussion with the proposed new supervisor, the student should avoid saying anything at the expense of the former supervisor and should focus on the positive reasons for working with the new person. If the supervisor of record, the Graduate Chair, the proposed new supervisor, and the student are all agreed that the change is in the best interest of the student, the change will be implemented. All of this shall be documented in a letter to all parties. If there is a disagreement among these parties, or if the Graduate Chair deems that the change is not likely to be in the interests of the student, or if the proposed change will involve difficulties in constituting a viable graduate supervisory committee, the issue shall be referred to the Graduate Committee for a decision.
