Beijing. March 28. INTERFAX-CHINA - China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) plans to build the world's biggest offshore wind farm, which will have an installed capacity of 1,100 megawatts, state media reported today.

The wind farm, to be located near Weihai City in eastern Shandong Province, will require total investment of RMB 21 billion ($3 billion). First phase construction is to begin in October this year, and the project is expected to take 10 years to complete, Xinhua news agency reported.

Upon completion, the wind farm is to produce 2.5 million megawatt hours of electricity annually, thereby saving the consumption of 1.2 million tons of standard coal a year and cutting annual carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide emissions by 1.88 million tons and 22,000 tons respectively.

CNOOC statistics show that China has 250,000 MW of potential onshore wind power capacity, and 750,000 MW offshore, along its eastern coastal regions.
