2009 District VIII Rising Star Awards

At the 2009 CASE District VIII Annual Conference in Seattle, WA, three Rising Star Awards were presented to:

Brianne Burrowes
University of Montana
Brianne started her career in advancement as an intern while she was still in Journalism school. While finding early success in the role as an assistant news editor, Brianne was thrust into the position of events coordinator where she lead the department’s largest  events of the fall. However, Brianne’s true passion lay in magazines and she assumed the role of interim editor of the university’s alumni magazine, the Montanan. At the age of 23, she then became the youngest editor-in-chief of the alumni magazine and has taken it to a new level, infusing an infectious energy and enthusiasm to the look and feel of the publication.

Karen Filbert
Bow Valley College
Karen Filbert holds the position of Special Events Officer at Bow Valley College in Calgary, Alberta. She exemplifies the key qualities of a CASE Rising Star by combining exceptional organizational abilities and work ethic with an innovative approach to the projects she leads. Karen has successfully organized and delivered outstanding events that have built stakeholder loyalty and created environments where philanthropic giving have exceeded targeted marks. More importantly, these events have given the institution a personal face to the donors, where they are able to engage with both faculty and recipients to see the relationships they are giving to.

Kyle Funakoshi
University of Washington
Kyle began his career in student affairs working with underrepresented communities where his passion for higher learning was evident in his ability to build communities and develop cross-departmental collaborations. Currently in the role of Associate Director, Alumni and Student Programs, University of Washington Alumni Association, Kyle has achieved a number of benchmark successes including, playing an instrumental part in the recognition of 442 UW Japanese American students who were put into internment camps during the second World War. The awarding of all 442 students with honorary UW degrees generated positive world-wide publicity for the institution and all involved.

Congratulations!
