Campus Recreation and Community Programs - Active for Life University of Alberta

MOD Contemporary Dance Movement

MOD Contemporary Dance Movement

MOD is not only run and structured differently than any other dance group on campus, but it also maintains an advanced performance quality through annual auditions in a dance style (contemporary) which has yet to be explored.

MOD is a creative student company. This encompasses high level dancers, given the opportunity for high level choreography, rehearsals, and performances, with no intervention from outside teachers/choreographers. We are a student run, student led company. We maintain advanced performance work, and give numerous developed dancers who attend the University a chance to explore their own creativity, through the creation and choreography of their own individual pieces for a year-end show.

 The Contemporary Style

This company differs greatly in its structure and its contemporary style. It is a youthful and ever changing genre, which has not yet been explored by many of the Edmonton Municipal dance schools or companies. This contemporary style may vary between modern, jazz, jazz funk, and hip hop, depending on the dancers/choreographers preference.

 The Vision

The 2011-2012 Academic year will be MOD’s first year as a Campus Rec dance company at the U of A, however in five years this company will be self-funded through ticket sales, and a well known beacon of elevated, advanced contemporary dance as an art within the University and the Edmonton community as a whole. The vision is of high school students leaving their studio dance lives and dreams of a professional dance career behind, and choosing to attend the University of Alberta because of the prestigious contemporary company which they strive to be a part of. There will be a community of alumni supporting this company in years to come as it was an integral part of their university career at the U of A. MOD will be something ever growing, but something youthful. Something entirely outside of the rigid structure of classical repertoires, with a changing style to match the changing generations.

MOD will be a Movement.

Auditions

At the beginning of each year, MOD will hold auditions to welcome new members, however, it will continue to be a small company (20-25 advanced dancers) in years to come.

Technically, there are NO NECESSARY choreography experience, or specific years of experience prerequisites, although dancers will be selected by strength and performance quality during the auditions.

In September 2011, auditions will consist of two days:
DAY ONE, September 11 1:30-4:30 location TBA
            - warm up + across the floor + contemporary combinations
DAY TWO, September 14 6-9 PM location TBA
            - Callbacks must prepare a 1 minute solo of their own choreography

MOD is also hosting two days of “bootcamp” to help uncertain prospective members see what MOD encompasses. These will include warm up, across the floor, and various contemporary combinations. They will be led by MOD members from the 2010-2011 season, geared towards showing you the values and standards that lie within the group. Although these classes are not considered to be a part of auditions, dancer participation and performance will be considered when final decisions are made. The dates are:
-Friday September 9, 6-9 PM location TBA
-Saturday September 10, 3-6 PM location TBA
MOD asks that each participant brings $3 to participate in a bootcamp day. If you are planning on coming to both, you are asked to pay a reduced rate of $5.
