Started in 1934, the U of A fencing club is one of the oldest athletic organizations on campus. We participate in the Olympic sport of fencing, an armed combat sport involving stabbing and slashing with one of three weapons. The three weapons are foil, epee, and sabre. In foil, the target area is the torso and points are scored only by stabbing. In epee, the entire body is target and points are also scored only by stabbing. In sabre, everything from the waist up is target and points can be scored with stabbing and slashing. We offer beginner and intermediate classes in foil and sabre. In addition the club hosts the annual Wetterberg Fencing Tournament here at the university.
The U of A fencing club is a recognized member club of the Alberta Fencing Association.
People of all fitness levels and experience are welcome to participate.
For anyone who feels they need more formalized fencing instruction the Campus Recreation Instructional Program offers Beginner Fencing classes. However, all skill levels are welcome to join the club. No experience is required; our volunteer coaches are prepared to teach absolute beginners as well as more avanced fencers. A typical practice consists of: warm-up, footwork, bladework, and exercises, followed by open fencing.
