Anthropology is the scientific study of the human condition, an exploration of the biological, linguistic, social, material, and cultural aspects of life in the past, present, and future. Of the many disciplines that study our species, Homo sapiens, only anthropology seeks to understand the whole panorama—in geographic space and evolutionary time—of human existence.

Described as the most humanistic of the social sciences and the most scientific of the humanities, anthropology is unique among academic disciplines in its attention to the entire human condition and its holistic approach to the study of human life.

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Alberta is committed to an integrated subdisciplinary approach, including biological, socio-cultural, linguistic, and archaeological anthropology, to advance our knowledge of who we are, how we came to be that way, and where we may go in the future.
