The role of the three Institute Research Coordinators is to identify and stimulate research interest in gaming & gambling at each of the three universities affiliated with the Institute.

Dr. David Hodgins, PhD, C. Psych is currently a Professor, Department of Psychology, and University of Calgary with an adjunct appointment with the Faculty of Medicine.  Dr. Hodgins is also a practicing clinical psychologist. His research publications and clinical work are in the area of recovery from addictions. A brief treatment approach for problem gamblers involving self-help and telephone support that his team had developed has been recognized as a promising treatment by the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.

Dr. Smith has been a professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta for the past 25 years.  He is now with the Department of Government Studies where he works with the Alberta Gaming Research Institute.  Dr. Smith has been researching gambling public policy issues for 20 years, his scholarly contributions include; numerous articles in academic journals, book chapters, and presentations at national and international conferences.  Dr. Smith was co-author of several studies that examined the gambling patterns and behaviors of adult and adolescent Albertans and was the principal investigator on studies dealing with gambling-related crime and the impacts of video lottery terminal gambling. Dr. Smith has appeared frequently in the national media commenting on gambling issues, most notably on CBC’s “The National,” “Newsday” and “The Fifth Estate” and on “Score” and TSN documentaries dealing with sports betting.

Dr. Robert Williams is a professor in the School of Health Sciences, University of Lethbridge and also the Lethbridge Coordinator for the Alberta Gaming Research Institute.  Dr. Williams is a clinical psychologist by training and spent the first part of his career as a clinician in northern Manitoba (1985 - 1996) and then Calgary (1996 - 2001).  In 2001 Dr. Williams accepted a faculty position at the University of Lethbridge, funded by the Alberta Gaming Research Institute. 
 
Dr. Williams has published in the areas of psychophysiology, seasonal affective disorder, evolutionary theory, fetal alcohol syndrome, adolescent addictions, health care practice, public policy, and gambling.  In the past several years most of his work has focused on gambling, where he is an internationally recognized expert.  His research endeavors in this area include:  the socioeconomic impacts of gambling, Internet gambling, prevention of problem gambling, assessment of problem gambling, the proportion of gambling revenue derived from problem gamblers, and the prevalence and nature of gambling in Aboriginal communities.
