19. OPPORTUNISTIC SCREENING AND INTERVENTION STRATEGIES FOR PROBLEM GAMBLERS IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY

This project developed, implemented and evaluated strategies for screening, intervention and treatment of problem gamblers within an integrated health promotion framework. This pilot study enabled the research team to focus on the construction and testing of the survey instrument. Prof. Donna L. Status (Complete):

The four main objectives identified in the initial proposal were successfully achieved in the pilot study. This developmental study has advanced knowledge is several ways including (1) incorporating a screening and risk assessment protocol for problem gambling into a health risk screening process; (2) confirming that it is feasible to have ER staff and patients cooperate with and accept the screening procedure; (3) conceptualizing screening and intervention for problem gambling within a population health framework and confirming that an individual at-risk for problem gambling can be identified by the Surveyor and that individuals are receptive to the debriefing process. An article is in progress for submission to the peer-reviewed Journal of Case Management and to the Journal of eGambling.

The Alberta Gaming Research Institute provides grant funding to support peer-endorsed academic investigations into many aspects of gambling research. The contents, recommendations, and findings of the associated research reports, posted on this website, represent the views of the researcher(s).
